Wild and Wacky Homes: From Skate Bowls to Tea Pots
On the 28th of September, Rightmove added a house for sale for £200,000, boasting 3 bedrooms, a modern kitchen and of course, a Skate Bowl. (1) The house hit the news, with both the BBC and the Telegraph commenting on its unique selling point. (2)

The BBC noted that, “The 19th Century property in Terrington St Clement, near King’s Lynn, Norfolk, previously served as a military club during the two World Wars.” (2)
From the outside, the house looks like a traditional terrace, tucked away neatly into the village. But inside, there’s a special twist. It took the current owner, Rob Marsden just six months to “build the 8m (26ft) by 12m (39ft) wooden skate bowl.” (2)
“Mr Marsden was fully aware of the former village hall’s potential to develop into a home with a wow factor,” explained a spokesperson for Attik, the property services company managing the sale. (3)
“Whilst Mr Marsden’s love of skating, kick flips and grinds remains at the forefront of his personal life, his business has grown in leaps and bounds and the daily hard work and grind means that it is time to restructure and relocate. Offering the unique opportunity for someone to purchase this amazing property and inherit a skate park of their very own.” (3)
The property neighbours a number of schools, a service station and is approximately 4.6 miles from the nearest station, which is Kings Lynn. (1)
A trend in weird and wonderful homes has emerged on the property market. The telegraph recently discussed a Grade II listed home in Kent, which used to be a pair of water towers. The article explained that, “Until 1942, the building was a water softening plant. Now it is a six-bedroom family home, with a striking white and glass exterior. Features include a gym, library and swimming pool, as well as two roof terraces with a plunge pool.” (4) The guide price of the property is £2.95m. (4)

Zoopla recently posted a list of what they found to be the 10 most unusual homes, too. One of which was “A sweet treat for tea fans. Your very own tea pot house for £10,000.” (5)

In addition, Rightmove recently blogged about “The Old Bank” in Bristol which “was purchased last year and has been converted into rental apartments.” The flats are built into the Victorian structure, with some interesting features kept, “such as a toilet in the old bank safe!” (6)

The trend has gained such momentum, that it has even extended to hotels, and online directories of unusual places to stay have launched. QuirkyAccom for example, advertise the opportunity to stay with Llamas in Cumbria, advertising “Llamas Pyjamas” to be a “fantastic themed boutique Bed & Breakfast in Eden Valley on the edge of the Lake District.” (7) Apparently, “Prices start from £80 a night for a room for 2/3. The Safari Family Suite (an authentic Safari lodge) is available from £130 a night and there is also Barn Owl Cottage which sleeps 6, is self-catering and starts at £275 for a minimum of 2 nights.” (7)
