The demand for student accommodation - Stoke-on-Trent

Throughout the UK there are a number of cities which we feel have a constant need for student accommodation. One of the cities in which we believe there is consistently strong demand is Stoke-on-Trent, home to Staffordshire University.

This research has been taken from a report conducted by CBRE in 2015 which can be downloaded at the bottom of the page.

 

Overview

There are a number of factors that contribute towards the growing demand of student accommodation in Stoke-on-Trent, some of which include:

  • Over 900 students enrolled at The University of Keele and 575 students enrolled at Staffordshire University Stafford campus live in Stoke-on-Trent. Together with students attending other institutions there are over 6,500 full time students living in Stoke-on-Trent.
  • Staffordshire University is focussing on their Stoke-on-Trent campus, moving students there from the Stafford campus. This will create additional demand for student housing in Stoke-on-Trent.
  • We estimate that there is a headroom of over 2,000 students potentially requiring, but unable to access, purpose built accommodation. Additionally, further demand will come from Keele University students who want to live in Stoke-on-Trent.
  • For illustrative purposes, if we add to this the 7,890 full time students attending The University of Keele (Newcastle-under-Lyme) and the 4,415 full time students attending Staffordshire University Stafford campus, there are a total of 19,162 students enrolled at institutions with campuses in the region. This would equate to the 23rd largest student population outside of London.

 

Where are students living in Stoke-on-Trent?

The research highlights that the average percentage of students living in ‘Other rented accommodation’ is significantly higher in Stoke-on-Trent than other locations throughout the UK. This is illustrated below in a table from the CBRE report.

Summary

  • Stoke-on-Trent has a lower proportion of students living in provider maintained property and private sector halls.
  • Stoke-on-Trent has a higher proportion of students living in other rented accommodation.
  • Stoke-on-Trent has a higher proportion of students living in parental/guardian home suggesting a higher than average number of students are from the local area.
