Government Approves Healthy New Towns Pilot

Darlington, County Durham has been chosen by the Government for a new NHS-linked affordable housing scheme (1). NHS England, headed by Simon Stevens, pilots the scheme and aims to improve the health footprint of a 2500 new development in Darlington consisting of:

  • Fast-food-free zones around schools
  • dementia-friendly streets and shops
  • Skype calls and instant messaging with GPs

Durham County Council joins Liverpool City Council (2), Halton and several others throughout the UK with health initiatives lead by the creation of “healthy” towns. Where the Liverpool Healthy Homes scheme sought to provide advice and support to make health changes from healthy eating to home safety and improvements, NHS England goes one-step-further to create new towns with a specific agenda to build healthy communities.

This comes soon after the Government announced £6billion spending in the North East over 15 years from 2015 to improve the housing stock, environment and the infrastructure of its Northern Powerhouse (3). The future looks bright for County Durham.

Although the creation of new homes in the Darlington area may ring bells for those who believe this will negatively impact the rental market in County Durham, we feel that this couldn’t be further from the truth. An improvement in the quality of life in County Durham could lead to greater migration (5) in to the area where, in 2012, 30.1% of those moving in to County Durham were found to choose 2 bedroom properties (4) and 32.7% chose terraced properties specifically.

SPV40 offers Property Moose investors the opportunity to invest in a fully refurbished 2 bedroom end-terraced house on the main commuter link between Crook and Durham City Centre.
